Winter Chrysanthemum Cultivation in Highlands Increases Crop Yield and Improves Soil
In the highlands, winter temperatures often hinder crop production, leaving land fallow. To address this, the Bat Xat District Agricultural Service Center introduced chrysanthemum cultivation. This initiative aims to boost crop yields and income for local communities. Chrysanthemum cultivation also improves soil health, reducing pests and diseases in subsequent rice crops. According to Mr. Si Trung Kien, Director of the Bat Xat District Agricultural Service Center, rotating crops helps eliminate soilborne diseases and facilitates organic rice cultivation, enhancing land value. In Muong Hum commune, farmers like Mr. Tan Lao San are utilizing fallow rice paddies for winter chrysanthemum cultivation. With support in seeds, fertilizers, and training, the crop thrives. "Chrysanthemum cultivation is not technically complex," Mr. San shared, emphasizing the importance of avoiding pesticides for medicinal plant standards. While Typhoon No. 3 caused initial delays, the long-term plan includes expanding cultivation. Mr. Chau Van Chung, Chairman of the Muong Hum Commune People's Committee, assures close monitoring throughout the process to optimize yield and economic efficiency. The Agricultural Service Center in Lang Quang village is propagating chrysanthemum for future planting, reducing reliance on external seedling sources. The district plans to register planting area codes for traceability and pest control. A purchasing agreement for fresh flowers at 21,000 VND/kg guarantees a market for the harvest. Chrysanthemum, a perennial plant with medicinal properties, is well-suited for the highlands due to its resilience and minimal pest issues. The current farming practices align with the requirements of the partnering company.
