When farmers 'turn their backs' on chemical pesticides
The use of biological pesticides is an inevitable trend in sustainable agriculture. Farmers in Kon Tum province are increasingly turning to biological pesticides and natural herbal preparations, minimizing the use of harmful chemical pesticides. The demand for safe agricultural products and organic food drives this shift. In Dak Ha district, a major coffee and fruit-producing region, farmers like Mr. Nguyen Van Ghi prioritize biological methods to protect both their health and the environment. He explains that prolonged use of chemical pesticides harms beneficial soil organisms and poses health risks. His diversified garden thrives on composted cow manure and microbial preparations. While biological pesticides require more frequent application, they offer a sustainable solution. The Sau Nhung Agricultural Production and Trading Cooperative, focused on VietGAP and HACCP certified coffee production, also champions biological pesticides. Director Nguyen Tri Sau emphasizes that consumer demand for safe, organic products necessitates this change. Farmers now prioritize product value over sheer yield, recognizing that healthier farming practices lead to higher quality crops. Effective use of biological pesticides requires understanding the specific needs of each crop and implementing preventative measures.
