We Believe Good Years Are Coming for Passion Fruit
According to Renzo Gómez of Selva Industrial SA, the Peruvian passion fruit market remains stable. While the Minister of Agriculture warned of potential overproduction, Gómez believes the market is strong due to the fruit's organoleptic qualities and increasing global demand. Peru currently has around 6,500 hectares dedicated to passion fruit cultivation, producing an estimated 110,000 tons annually. Gómez highlighted the distinct flavor profile of Peruvian yellow passion fruit compared to the purple variety grown in Vietnam, making it ideal for various food and beverage applications. He acknowledged past production challenges with Brix levels and announced a collaborative effort with ADEX exporters and INIA to develop a pure seed variety with consistently high Brix. Gómez emphasized that the passion fruit market is sustainable due to the balance between fresh fruit consumption and industrial processing for juice and concentrate. He also noted significant demand from Europe, the United States, and Asia, driven by the growing popularity of passion fruit flavor in various culinary creations. Despite potential oversupply concerns, Gómez reassured that current prices remain profitable for farmers, and the industry is focused on promoting sustainable cultivation practices and expanding market reach for Peruvian passion fruit.
