Vermicomposting: Promoting Organic and Circular Agriculture
The demand for organic fertilizers in Quang Ninh province is increasing. To meet this demand, Ms. Nguyen Thi Vinh established Ha Long Xanh Organic Agriculture Cooperative in October 2023. Ms. Vinh, the Cooperative's Director, explained that improper use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides by many farmers leads to waste, pollution, and health risks. The cooperative aims to promote sustainable agriculture and safer farming practices through vermicompost production. Vermicompost is a high-quality organic fertilizer that improves soil health and is ideal for organic vegetables and fruits. While not a complete replacement for chemical fertilizers, vermicompost reduces their need, contributing to a more sustainable approach. The cooperative uses a hybrid earthworm species chosen for its adaptability, high manure output, and disease resistance. These earthworms consume a variety of organic materials, from livestock manure to kitchen waste, which are processed into vermicompost. The cooperative currently produces 10 tons of vermicompost per month on over 400m2, selling at 8,000 VND/kg. With plans for expansion, the cooperative aims to increase production to 30 tons per month, supplying the province with this valuable resource. According to Mr. Tran Van Thuc, Head of Quang Ninh province's Crop Production and Plant Protection Sub-Department, vermicompost enhances nutrient absorption, strengthens plant immunity, and promotes circular agriculture practices.
