Turkish Agricultural Exports Thrive Despite Climate Change Impact
Turkish apple production faces a projected 13% decline due to climate change impacts like warmer temperatures and water shortages, according to a USDA Foreign Agricultural Service report. However, apple exports are anticipated to increase, driven by large commercial operations less affected by the adverse weather. While smaller, lower-quality apples will likely be diverted to juice production, key export markets like India and Russia remain strong. Meanwhile, pear production is expected to reach a record high, fueled by growing global demand and investment in new orchards. This surge will boost both consumption and exports, with Russia as the primary export destination. Grape production also shows improvement, leading to a slight increase in exports despite past challenges with mildew disease. The Turkish government is actively addressing climate change effects on agriculture through measures like water-use restrictions and incentives for sustainable practices.
