Still More Room for Growth in China's Durian Market
China's increasing demand for durian fruit is driving export growth from South-East Asian producers like Vietnam and Malaysia. BMI Country Risk and Industry Research forecasts that this heightened demand will continue to fuel competition within the global export market, potentially challenging Thailand's leading position. Vietnam's durian fruit exports have surged since gaining market access in 2022, thanks to factors like counter-seasonal production and proximity to China via a shared land border. This growth is expected to generate increased revenue and improve agricultural processing within Vietnam. While Malaysia recently gained approval for fresh durian fruit exports to China, BMI predicts substantial growth in this sector. Despite increasing competition, the durian market in China shows strong potential for long-term expansion due to the fruit's rising popularity and premium market position.
