Starting a Business with Organic Fertilizer from Water Caltrop Shells
Nguyen Truong An, a biotechnology expert in Dong Thap province, Vietnam, has developed an innovative organic fertilizer made from water caltrop shells. Recognizing the growing trend of organic agriculture and the abundance of discarded water caltrop shells, An saw an opportunity to address both environmental concerns and the need for sustainable farming practices. After two years of research, overcoming challenges like limited Vietnamese documentation on water caltrops, he launched his organic fertilizer product in early 2023. Unlike conventional fertilizers, An's product is odorless, benefiting both the environment and consumers. It also provides a new income stream for locals by utilizing agricultural waste. The fertilizer, made by composting ground water caltrop shells with Trichoderma, enriches the soil, promotes healthy plant growth, and is suitable for ornamental plants and fruit trees. While some gardeners accustomed to chemical fertilizers remain skeptical, An is confident that growing awareness of organic agriculture will increase acceptance of his product. He currently offers organic fertilizer pellets and growing media, primarily supplying local gardens. An plans to expand production, partnering with water caltrop milk producers to secure a larger supply of shells, and explore e-commerce channels to reach a wider market.
