South African Apples Set for Thailand
South Africa's return to the Thai market after over a decade will be celebrated with the arrival of the first container of apples in Bangkok in mid-March. Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen praised the new agreement, emphasizing its importance in creating export opportunities for South African fruit growers in the global market. The agreement, signed late last year, allows South African apple and pear growers to ship substantial volumes to Thailand. Core Fruit Marketing spearheaded the first shipment of Joya-branded apples. Gala apples are expected to dominate shipments, followed by Pink Lady apples. The reopening of the Thai market signifies a major boost for the South African apple industry, strengthening its presence in the Far East and Asia, key destinations for approximately 35% of total apple exports. This access to new markets comes at a crucial time for growers facing challenges in established trade patterns.
