Significant increase in grape shipments through Walvis Bay
Table grape shipments through the port of Walvis Bay nearly doubled this season, reaching 3.62 million cartons compared to 1.83 million last season. This significant increase, driven by a rise in container vessels and the strategic decision by exporters to utilize Walvis Bay, alleviated pressure on the Cape Town port. The increased vessel frequency resulted in a shorter transit time of 12 to 13 days to Rotterdam and London Gateway, ensuring fresher fruit arrival compared to shipments from Cape Town. While longer distances to Walvis Bay from certain growing regions result in higher landside costs, the overall benefits of faster transit times and improved port efficiency contributed to a successful export season for Namibian grapes.
