Shrimp Broodstock Still Reliant on Imports
In 2024, Vietnam produced 159 billion shrimp postlarvae. However, the Directorate of Fisheries reported that shrimp broodstock remains heavily reliant on imports. Whiteleg shrimp broodstock saw a 78.8% import dependency, while black tiger shrimp broodstock relied 56.9% on wild-caught sources. This dependence on outside sources limits domestic supply and autonomy in production. Many seed production and nursery facilities have not been certified, posing disease risks. Furthermore, high production costs, including feed and seed expenses, coupled with inadequate infrastructure, continue to challenge the industry. Improved domestic broodstock and farming practices are needed for Vietnamese shrimp farming to thrive in the global export market.
