Rach Mop Sluice Gate Undergoes Trial Operation in Preparation for 2025 Dry Season
The Rach Mop sluice gate, a key component of the Southern Hau River Bank Water Control Project, recently underwent a trial operation. This project aims to secure freshwater resources for Soc Trang province, especially during the anticipated peak of the dry season in late February 2025. The sluice gate and navigation lock are complete and ready to control salinity intrusion. According to Mr. Tran Van Lau, Chairman of the Soc Trang Provincial People's Committee, drought and saltwater intrusion are worsening, making clean water critical. The Rach Mop sluice gate will significantly contribute to storing freshwater for agricultural production in the province. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, recognizing the long-term need for drought and salinity solutions, supports the project. While the Rach Mop sluice gate isn't a major project on its own, its coordinated operation with other infrastructure will protect a substantial area of agricultural land. The Ministry has also allocated funds for five additional sluice gates in the project.
