Pork Prices Soar at Traditional Markets
Consumers in Ho Chi Minh City are feeling the pinch as pork prices reach a four-year high. Prices at traditional markets now range from 120,000 to 230,000 VND per kilogram, forcing many to adjust their spending habits. Ms. Hoang Oanh, a resident of Binh Thanh District, has reduced her pork consumption to twice a week due to the escalating costs. She notes that prices, already high before the Tet holiday, have climbed significantly, with pork ribs reaching 230,000 VND per kilogram. Other cuts like pork shoulder and pork belly are priced at 240,000 VND and 200,000 VND per kilogram, respectively. "Pork prices are now comparable to beef prices," she lamented. To cope with the rising costs, consumers like Mrs. Lan from Tan Binh District have increased their consumption of chicken, eggs, and fish. She recalls that pork leg and pork chops previously cost around 90,000-100,000 VND per kilogram but now command prices between 120,000-140,000 VND. Even small traders are struggling. Ms. Hong, a vendor at Tan Dinh Market, reports a 20% decrease in pork supply at her stall and dwindling customer purchases due to higher retail prices. The reduced supply at wholesale markets and the rising cost of live pigs, now over 70,000 VND per kilogram, contribute to the price surge. This has also impacted food vendors who rely on pork. Some have raised prices and adjusted portion sizes to offset costs.
