Pioneer Cultivates Thai Custard Apples on Sandy Soil
In the sandy soil region of Cau Ngang district, Tra Vinh province, Mr. Trang Tan Tai has pioneered the organic cultivation of Thai custard apples. This area, known for its poor water retention and nutrient-deficient soil, traditionally supports short-term crops. Two years ago, Mr. Tai introduced Thai custard apple cultivation on his 0.14-hectare farm. Through diligent care and methodical farming techniques, including building mounds for drainage and utilizing a grass cover for moisture retention, he now harvests twice a year. His average yield of 20 tons per hectare has made his orchard a learning center for local farmers. Mr. Tai's success stems from adapting his approach to the specific needs of Thai custard apples, which have poor water tolerance. He meticulously manages irrigation, allowing grass growth during dry seasons and ensuring proper drainage during wet seasons. He also employs specific fertilization and pollination techniques, resulting in fruit weighing up to half a kilogram. While the crop is still new to the region, Mr. Tai's success demonstrates the potential of Thai custard apple cultivation in Tra Vinh, even on challenging sandy soil.
