Peruvian Agricultural Sector Lacks Risk Prevention Culture
The recent mango oversupply in Peru highlights a systemic lack of risk prevention in the agricultural sector, according to rural development specialist Lisi Ruiz. Instead of advising farmers to switch crops, as suggested by Minister of Agrarian Development Ángel Manero, Ruiz emphasizes the need for early intervention and production monitoring. The oversupply, particularly in Lambayeque, stems from climatic issues and poor crop management, compounded by irrigation problems in Piura that delayed harvests. This situation, Ruiz argues, could have been mitigated with better planning and early warnings from authorities like the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing. She suggests promoting local consumption through marketing campaigns and providing subsidies to affected farmers. Additionally, preventative measures against pests like the fruit fly are crucial. Ruiz criticizes Midagri's proposals as disconnected from the realities of agriculture in Vietnam and stresses the urgent need for a risk prevention culture within the Peruvian agricultural sector.
