Overcoming Challenges in Vietnam's Agriculture Sector

In 2024, Vietnam faced unusual weather patterns due to climate change. El Nino caused drought and saltwater intrusion in the Central Highlands, Southeast region, and Mekong Delta, while Typhoon No. 3 caused flooding in the north. The Department of Irrigation, under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, responded by managing irrigation and rural water supply initiatives. These efforts ensured sufficient water for agriculture in the Northern Midlands and Delta, protected rice paddies and fruit trees, and supplied clean water to households affected by drought and saltwater intrusion. By the end of 2024, over 58% of rural households had access to clean water, meeting government targets. International collaborations with organizations like the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and UNICEF addressed water management, sanitation, and disaster relief. The Department also played a crucial role in border demarcation, resolving boundary issues with neighboring countries. Looking ahead to 2025, the Department will focus on operational efficiency, drought and flood management, and securing funding for irrigation and clean water infrastructure.
