Organic Sugar Apple Cultivation to Boost Tourism
Minh Trung Cooperative in Tay Ninh province, Vietnam, a large-scale cooperative specializing in sugar apple production, is expanding into agritourism. With over 600 hectares dedicated to growing this specialty fresh fruit, the cooperative has established a strong presence in the market, even exporting internationally. To further enhance their offerings, Minh Trung Cooperative has transitioned to organic farming practices, converting over 30 hectares to organic sugar apple orchards. This shift has resulted in significantly higher yields – up to 12 tons per harvest compared to 5 tons with conventional methods – and improved fruit quality. The cooperative is also piloting a fully organic 2-hectare orchard near Ba Den Mountain, a popular tourist destination. While combating pests like mealybugs remains a challenge in fully organic agriculture, the cooperative is committed to this sustainable approach. To create a unique visitor experience, the farm features a variety of plants and animals, allowing tourists to enjoy the countryside, sample fresh organic sugar apples, and purchase them directly.
