Organic Macadamia Orchard Owner with a 'Sustainable and Steady' Mindset
Le Van Quyen, 51, owner of a 13-year-old macadamia orchard in Dak Nong province, Vietnam, focuses on sustainable agriculture. His two-hectare orchard is planted with seedling macadamia and durian trees, spaced for optimal growth. Quyen chose seedling trees for their longevity, envisioning a thriving orchard for future generations. He practices organic farming, using composted cow manure and microorganisms, aiming for a chemical-free environment. This aligns with his eco-tourism goals, ensuring a clean and healthy environment for visitors. While experts often recommend grafted macadamia trees for faster yields, Quyen's seedling trees produce a respectable 3.5 tons of nuts annually. He sells his harvest for a good price, proving the viability of his approach. Quyen's commitment to organic farming extends to pest and disease control, using biological products to minimize environmental impact. His sustainable practices have earned him recognition and led to the formation of a cooperative to support other farmers in adopting similar methods.
