Organic Farming in Vietnam: Duckweed Fuels Snail Production
Concerned about the use of growth stimulants and antibiotics in snail farming, Ms. Nguyen Thi Binh, Director of Thien Phuc Agricultural and Medicinal Cooperative in Thai Nguyen province, Vietnam, pioneered a sustainable alternative using duckweed. Duckweed, a fast-growing aquatic plant with high protein content, provides a natural and nutritious food source for snails. This innovative approach aligns with the cooperative's commitment to organic agriculture and producing high-quality, safe food. Duckweed not only enriches the snails' diet but also contributes to a sustainable farming model by cleaning wastewater and minimizing the need for land traditionally used for food crops. According to technician Nong Trong Son, the process involves careful water treatment, the introduction of loofah to provide shade and supplemental food, and a controlled environment for the snails. The cooperative uses a specialized product to manage waste, further minimizing environmental impact and promoting healthy snail growth. This dedication to organic farming results in snails that are larger, uniform in size, and boast cleaner, more flavorful meat. Currently, the cooperative sells its snails to local restaurants, contributing to the economic vitality of the region.
