Low-Emission, Organic, and Ecological Rice Production: An Inevitable Trend

The College of Agriculture (Can Tho University) recently hosted a seminar on sustainable agricultural development. Experts discussed green growth in the Mekong Delta's rice production, highlighting the need for sustainable practices in the face of climate change impacts like floods, droughts, and saltwater intrusion. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chau Minh Khoi, Vice Rector of the College of Agriculture, shifting to green agriculture is crucial for Vietnam's international integration and aligns with the country's commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050. This commitment is further reinforced by Resolution No. 19-NQ/TW, which promotes ecological agriculture and green growth. The government's recent approval of a project for sustainable development of 1 million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice in the Mekong Delta by 2030 underscores this commitment. This initiative aims to reduce production costs and increase output through sustainable practices and technological advancements. Prof. Dr. Bui Chi Buu emphasized the importance of economic restructuring and a renewed growth model centered on economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social equity. Reducing carbon emissions in rice cultivation and reusing rice straw are key strategies in achieving these goals.
