Live Pig Prices Soar in Vietnam
Vietnam is experiencing a surge in live pig prices, reaching a high of 72,000 VND per kg in Dong Nai. Prices range from 68,000-71,000 VND per kg in the North, while the South sees the highest prices nationwide. This increase is attributed to low supply caused by disease concerns and high piglet prices, coupled with rising demand as schools and industrial parks reopen. Although the number of pigs arriving at wholesale markets has increased, it remains below pre-Lunar New Year levels. Experts predict prices will continue to rise but likely won't exceed the 2020 peak. The gap between grade 1 and 2 pig prices has also narrowed significantly. This price surge impacts retail prices, with pork belly reaching up to 185,000 VND per kg. While pork consumption is projected to increase, domestic supply challenges persist due to African swine fever and other diseases.
