Let Loose to Raise Shrimp: Playful Work, Real Reward
In the intertidal zones of Vietnam, a unique form of shrimp farming thrives. Farmers like Luong Van Nanh in Hai Phong City utilize a low-cost, eco-friendly approach to aquaculture, raising shrimp without stocking or feeding. This method relies on the natural environment, with ample seaweed for shelter and organic fertilizers to promote algae growth, the shrimp's primary food source. Nanh harvests 7-8 kilograms of shrimp daily using traditional traps, sometimes exceeding 10 kilograms during peak season. With the current market price at 140,000 VND per kilogram, this sustainable practice yields a significant profit. While rainfall can impact yields, minimal expenses for organic fertilizer contribute to high profit margins. Other farmers, like Vu Van Doan's son, An, have adopted similar methods, achieving substantial income by leveraging the natural reproductive cycle of shrimp in freshwater ponds. This highlights the growing potential of sustainable shrimp farming in Vietnam.
