Jordan Signs Agreement with FAO on Water Security
Jordan's Minister of Water and Irrigation, Raed Abu Saud, signed an agreement with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to launch the Water Scarcity Initiative in the Near East and North Africa region. This initiative aims to enhance water resource planning and promote sustainable water use in agriculture. Jordan will implement integrated water management practices and improve water governance to ensure water security amidst climate change. The project will focus on introducing modern irrigation techniques and utilizing unconventional water resources. FAO's representative emphasized the importance of this partnership in tackling water scarcity in the region. Jordan has already reduced its agricultural water consumption to 51% of available resources, significantly lower than the international average of 85%. The country is also investing in projects like the Aqaba-Amman desalination project to further enhance water security.
