From the Case of Bean Sprouts Soaked in Banned Substances: Decree on Implementation of the Food Safety Law to be Amended
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam addressed the intentional use of banned substances in bean sprout production facilities in Dak Lak province. The police investigation confirmed the use of 6-Benzylaminopurine, a prohibited substance, leading to the prosecution of four facility owners. Bach Hoa Xanh supermarket recalled and destroyed contaminated bean sprouts, and Lam Dao Co., Ltd.'s food safety certification was revoked. The incident prompted discussions on amending Decree 15/2018/ND-CP to strengthen food safety regulations. Deputy Minister Nam stressed the need for stricter penalties, increased responsibility of production and distribution facilities, and enhanced coordination between agencies. He highlighted the importance of proactive measures by producers to ensure food safety, rather than relying solely on post-inspection by government agencies. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development aims to close loopholes in current regulations and ensure comprehensive food safety management throughout the supply chain, from agricultural production to consumption.
