First Sea Shipment of Indian Pomegranates Arrives in Australia
India's first commercial shipment of pomegranates to Australia by sea marks a significant milestone for the country's agricultural exports. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the shipment of premium Sangola and Bhagwa pomegranates, capitalizing on a 20% year-over-year increase in global export of Indian pomegranates. Following successful air trials in 2024, over 12 tonnes of fruit from Maharashtra reached Sydney and Brisbane in January 2025, coinciding with Australia's non-producing season. APEDA chairman, Abhishek Dev, confirmed positive responses and strong demand for fresh fruit in Australian markets. This successful trial demonstrates the potential for future growth in agricultural products from India, utilizing advanced traceability systems to ensure quality and meet global standards.
