EU Tightens Regulations on Fresh Produce: What Vietnamese Businesses Need to Know
The European Union (EU) is implementing stricter regulations on sustainable agriculture to minimize environmental impact and ensure product quality. The Northern European market, known for its high standards for agricultural products, presents both challenges and opportunities for Vietnamese exporters. The new regulations focus on reducing pesticide residues, ensuring phytosanitary certification, and increasing inspection and monitoring of fresh fruit. Specifically, the EU requires imported agricultural products to meet stringent Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for pesticides. Some chemicals not permitted in the EU will be completely banned. Most fresh fruit imports require a phytosanitary certificate guaranteeing freedom from pests, though some, like pineapples and durians, are exempt. Increased inspections target high-risk products; for example, peppers from certain countries face a 50% inspection rate. Vietnamese exporters must comply with these regulations, ensuring products meet MRLs and have proper certification. Leveraging these standards can build trust with European consumers and provide a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
