EU Abandons Pesticide Reduction Plan, but Tightens Import Standards
The European Union's decision to abandon its 50% pesticide reduction target by 2030 could initially appear beneficial for Vietnamese agricultural exporters. However, the EU remains committed to tightening import standards, especially concerning pesticide residues on fresh fruit. While the controversial Sustainable Use Regulation (SUR) has been withdrawn, the focus has shifted to stricter enforcement of existing regulations and the development of safer pesticide alternatives through initiatives like the Biotech Act. This means Vietnamese exporters of fresh fruit, including durian fruit, must remain vigilant. The European Commission recently increased the inspection frequency for imported durian fruit, highlighting the ongoing need for compliance with EU standards. Vietnamese businesses must prioritize clean farming techniques and rigorous quality control to maintain access to this crucial market. Continued adherence to evolving EU regulations is paramount for long-term success in the European market.
