Ecological Rice Fields Call Back the Sarus Crane

The Sarus Crane Conservation and Development Project in Dong Thap Province, Vietnam, combines ecosystem restoration with sustainable agriculture in Vietnam. This ecological rice farming model minimizes chemical use and utilizes flood seasons for field regeneration. Starting in 2023, the project expanded from 39 hectares to 312.5 hectares by 2024, with increasing farmer participation. Farmers report reduced seed use and costs by switching to organic fertilizers. While rice yields may slightly decrease, profits increase due to cost savings, contributing to a cleaner environment favorable for the Sarus Crane's return. The project aims to expand to the entire buffer zone by 2032, further promoting agriculture in Vietnam and symbolizing harmony between agriculture and conservation. This initiative also seeks to develop the "Tam Nong Crane Rice" brand for domestic and export markets, boosting local incomes and community health.
