Ecological Agriculture at the Foot of Bu Hill
Nam Phuong Tien commune in Hanoi has become a popular paragliding destination. The area's unique proximity to mountains, forests, and streams creates a fertile environment for agriculture. Just over two decades ago, deforestation left the land barren. To combat this, local authorities initiated a grapefruit cultivation plan. Initial yields were inconsistent due to natural pollination, a problem later solved by supplementary pollination and intercropping with Dien pomelo. As grapefruit production increased, oversupply led to a shift towards organic farming practices to enhance quality and ensure food safety. The Nam Phuong Tien Organic Agriculture Cooperative now manages over 50 hectares of grapefruit orchards, with a portion certified organic and for export. Beyond grapefruit, the commune also experimented with organic rice production. However, market challenges in differentiating organic rice from conventionally grown rice led some farmers to abandon organic practices. The commune faces the challenge of maximizing the potential of its agricultural cooperatives. Recognizing the potential for organic agriculture, Chuong My Organic Cooperative has invested in Nam Phuong Tien, providing farmers with resources and training in organic farming techniques. The cooperative aims to expand its organic vegetable production and integrate experiential tourism into its operations, allowing visitors to participate in farming activities and enjoy the unique organic products of Bu Hill.
