Durian Exports Suddenly Stalled

Durian exports to China, Vietnam's largest market for the fruit, have come to a standstill due to new regulations. Since January 10, 2025, China requires an Auramine O inspection certificate for all imported durian, a dye suspected of causing cancer. This follows the discovery of the residue in Thai durian. Hundreds of Vietnamese durian containers have been turned away at the border, leaving businesses confused and facing potential losses. The Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (Vinafruit) is seeking clarification from the Plant Protection Department on the new procedures. While Vietnam's durian was not implicated, the new rule applies to all exporting countries. This delay threatens the 2025 durian export target of 3.5 billion USD, significantly impacting the Vietnamese fruit and vegetable export market as China accounts for 97% of Vietnam's durian exports. Swift action is needed to resolve the issue and prevent further economic hardship for farmers and businesses.
