Durian Cultivation Generates High Income for Vietnamese Farmers
Vietnam's agricultural restructuring initiatives are encouraging farmers to shift towards high-value crops like durian. In Tien Giang province, durian cultivation has generated significant interest, with profits reaching 1.7 billion VND/ha. This substantial income, significantly higher than that of rice or other fruit trees like mango, has driven many farmers to adopt durian farming. However, the Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends careful consideration of suitable growing regions for optimal yields. While the province has seen successful conversions to durian and other perennial crops, achieving 69% of its 2025 target, expansion should be strategic. The success of durian cultivation highlights the potential of Vietnam's agriculture sector to generate higher incomes for farmers through crop diversification.
