Creating New Spaces for Agricultural and Rural Development
In 2024, Vietnam's agricultural sector saw a 3.3% growth in total production value. Key highlights include increased output of durian, dragon fruit, and rubber. Despite storm damage, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development implemented support policies and solutions to restore production. A shift towards agricultural economics, focusing on value-added products, is underway. The export of agricultural products reached a record high of $62.5 billion USD, contributing to a significant trade surplus. Minister Hoan emphasizes the need to shift from agricultural production to agricultural economics, focusing on deep processing and multi-value growth to enhance the value of agricultural products. He uses the example of incorporating dried strawberries into cocoa products to illustrate this concept. The Minister also expresses concern about rural depopulation and the need to create sustainable livelihoods in the countryside to prevent further migration to urban areas. He highlights the potential of tourism and homestays to revitalize rural communities and generate income for local residents.
