Cooperatives are the 'key' to agricultural restructuring in Vietnam
Dong Thap province is a leading example of successful agricultural restructuring in Vietnam, thanks to the vital role of agricultural cooperatives. These cooperatives facilitate sustainable production and market adaptation by connecting farmers with markets, promoting the application of advanced technologies, and enhancing the value of agricultural products. With 165 operating cooperatives, Dong Thap demonstrates a significant commitment to cooperative economic development. Cooperatives empower farmers to transition from fragmented, small-scale farming to large-scale, synchronized operations. For instance, Binh Thanh Cooperative manages a 100-hectare rice production area, controlling every stage from seed provision to harvesting. This organized approach reduces production costs and improves farmers' incomes. Furthermore, cooperatives like Tan Cuong have invested in modern facilities for processing and storage, enabling farmers to withstand market fluctuations. By diversifying into products like chili and mangoes, and leveraging technology for traceability, cooperatives are strengthening Dong Thap's agricultural sector. The province also fosters "Farmers' Association" models, which encourage collaboration and pave the way for new cooperative formations, furthering the growth of sustainable agriculture in Vietnam.
