China Overtakes US as Vietnam's Top Shrimp Importer
In 2024, China imported $843 million worth of Vietnamese shrimp, a 39% year-over-year increase, surpassing the US to become Vietnam's leading shrimp importer. This surge in agricultural exports is attributed to reduced seafood supply in China due to unfavorable weather and policy changes promoting domestic consumption. Vietnam's total shrimp exports reached $3.9 billion, a 14% increase from 2023. While whiteleg shrimp remains a significant export, high-value products like lobster maintain strong demand in the Chinese market. Despite a cooling trend in whiteleg shrimp consumption, Vietnam's seafood industry anticipates continued growth in 2025, driven by increasing demand from regional markets.
