China Increases Purchase of Ca Mau Crab
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reported that crab exports to China in January reached 18.5 million USD, 18 times higher than the same period last year. This surge in global trade is driven by increased demand for Lunar New Year celebrations. Vietnamese Ca Mau crab is smaller and more affordable than competitors from Australia, the US, and Canada, meeting the needs of Chinese consumers. Its sweet and delicious meat also suits Chinese culinary preferences. High demand led to record prices for Ca Mau crab during the Lunar New Year, reaching 1.1 million VND per kg for grade 1 crabs in Nam Can district. While prices have cooled slightly after the holiday, they remain profitable for farmers. Domestic demand for Ca Mau crab also remains strong in Ho Chi Minh City and other markets. Ca Mau province, with over 250,000 hectares dedicated to crab farming, is the primary production area in Vietnam. With 80% of its production exported to China, this market significantly influences Vietnamese crab prices.
