Chilean Cherries Arrive in Vietnam at 'Unprecedented Low Prices'
Surveys at traditional markets and supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City reveal an abundance of Chilean cherries at significantly reduced prices. Before Tet (Lunar New Year), prices ranged from 200,000-350,000 VND per kilogram, but now they've dropped to 149,000-250,000 VND per kilogram. This represents a substantial decrease compared to last year. At Ba Chieu Market, smaller cherries are selling for 150,000 VND per kilogram, while larger ones are priced between 180,000-220,000 VND per kilogram. One vendor remarked that Chilean cherries have never been this affordable. This year's abundant harvest in Chile, coupled with stricter quality control in the Chinese market, led to a surplus and redirection of fresh fruit to other markets like Vietnam. A shipping delay during the peak Tet season further contributed to the price drop. Increased production in Chile also added to the oversupply, resulting in lower prices for consumers.
