Careful Calculation Needed Before Expanding One Million Hectare Rice Project Pilot
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Tran Thanh Nam urged careful consideration before expanding the one million hectare high-quality rice project in the Mekong Delta. Initial pilot programs yielded positive results, with higher yields and lower production costs. In the Autumn-Winter crop of 2024, yields in pilot areas were 1.5 to 3.4 tons/ha higher than non-pilot areas, while profits increased by 13.6% to 32.3%. Despite the success, Deputy Minister Nam emphasized the need for thorough assessment and prioritization of quality over speed. Key concerns include ensuring adequate irrigation infrastructure, providing support to farmers and cooperatives, and securing funding for future expansion. He stressed the importance of consistent practices and addressing the seasonal mindset of farmers. The Department of Crop Production will provide training to agricultural extension workers and cooperatives to ensure the success of the expanded program and will select qualified cooperatives for emission reduction payment pilots.
