Bringing Black Seedless Grapes to Northwest Vietnam: Unexpected Profits
Not far from Son La City, residents of Chieng Mung commune still rely on plum trees for economic stability. However, Nguyen Dinh Tuan, Director of Doan Ket Cooperative, chose a different path: cultivating Black Seedless grapes using sustainable organic farming methods. After a trip to China, Mr. Tuan recognized the potential of this variety. In 2021, he invested in 3,000 Black Seedless grape plants. This initial investment of 1.2 billion VND included a greenhouse and an automatic irrigation system. His first harvest yielded 6 tons of grapes, sold to supermarkets for 110,000 - 120,000 VND/kg, generating a profit of 300 million VND. Meticulous care is essential. After each harvest, the plants are pruned and organically fertilized with composted manure, corn, soybeans, and eggshells. Pest control relies on biological products, ensuring healthy plants and optimal yields. By 2024, Mr. Tuan harvested nearly 10 tons. The grapes are sold to supermarkets and directly to consumers who visit the farm. This year's profit reached 700 million VND. Mr. Tuan plans to expand, importing Korean grape varieties and developing experiential tourism.
