Breach in Dike Floods Half of Con Ho Island
On January 17th, the Cang Long District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that high tides caused a 17-meter dike breach in My Hiep A Hamlet. The breach, occurring around 3:00 AM on January 16th, flooded 12 hectares of orchards belonging to 11 households on Con Ho Island. The floodwaters, reaching depths of 1 to 1.2 meters, impacted agricultural products including orchards. Salinity levels ranged from 0.4 to 0.9‰, also affecting aquaculture and poultry. Local authorities and residents quickly implemented temporary repairs using coconut trunks and earth. A permanent solution has been proposed to reinforce a vulnerable 680-meter section of the dike to protect residents and their livelihoods. Con Ho Island, encompassing over 25 hectares, is home to 24 households and known for its fertile land suitable for agriculture, particularly green-skinned pomelo cultivation.
