Bonsai Coconut Shaped as Zodiac Animals Attracts Customers for Tet
Five years ago, Mr. Dau Thanh Tung in Binh Chanh district discovered nurseries in Indonesia and Malaysia crafting zodiac animals from dried coconuts. Inspired, he began learning and developing this craft. Using dried coconut shells, Mr. Tung carves them into zodiac animal shapes, applying glossy paint for color and a polished finish. He spent countless hours perfecting his technique, ensuring each detail was harmonious. In a small garden space, Mr. Tung creates unique coconut artworks, including bonsai coconuts of the 12 zodiac animals, hydroponic bonsai coconuts, and miniature landscapes. For the Year of the Snake 2025, he introduced the popular "Snake Holding a Pearl" design, symbolizing prosperity. Each coconut takes 7 to 8 months to complete, with the "Snake Holding a Pearl" requiring nearly a year. With Tet approaching, Mr. Tung has prepared 800 bonsai coconut pots. While they appeal to a wide range of customers, many choose them based on their birth year for Tet gifts. He has already sold about 60% and hopes to sell out so everyone can enjoy the holiday. Bonsai coconuts are easy to care for, lasting 5-7 years with proper watering, sunlight, and occasional pruning. With growing online sales, these bonsai coconuts are a popular Tet choice, priced from 450,000 VND to 2.5 million VND depending on size and detail. Mr. Tung's products provide a stable income and were recognized as outstanding agricultural products of Binh Chanh district in 2023. He hopes to eventually introduce his work to international markets.
