Biosecurity NZ Investigates Second Auckland Fruit Fly Discovery
The New Zealand biosecurity organization Kiwifruit Vine Health (KVH) announced a second fruit fly alert for 2025 in Auckland. A single male oriental fruit fly was found in a backyard surveillance trap in Birkdale. This is the same species found in a different Auckland area on January 3rd. Biosecurity New Zealand is increasing trapping and inspections in the area, including daily checks within a 200-meter radius of the discovery. KVH emphasized that finding a single male fruit fly doesn't confirm a breeding population. However, precautions such as legal restrictions on fresh fruit movement out of the affected area will be implemented. Since 1996, 13 different fruit flies have been discovered in Auckland and Northland, all successfully eradicated.
