Bac Lieu Farmers Enjoy a Bumper Watermelon Harvest for Tet
Vinh Phu Dong is known as the watermelon capital of Bac Lieu province for the Tet holiday. Thanks to suitable soil conditions, favorable weather, and the application of scientific farming techniques, Vinh Phu Dong farmers have achieved high yields of large, round, and sweet watermelons. The harvest typically begins around the 22nd to 25th of the 12th lunar month. This year, farmers are enjoying an abundant harvest and stable prices, with traders purchasing watermelons directly in the fields. Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, a local farmer, shared that his yield increased by 20% compared to last year, and prices range from 8,000 - 10,000 VND/kg ($0.33 - $0.41/kg). The successful harvest allows farmers to enjoy a prosperous Tet. Another farmer, Mr. Pham Hiep Chau, stated that watermelon farming offers stable profits, with farmers earning nearly 20 million VND ($830) per cong after expenses. The Phuoc Long District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development encourages watermelon cultivation as part of crop diversification, leading to improved living standards for local farmers. The district also provides training in organic and bio-safe production processes to meet market demands.
