An Organic Apple Orchard in the 'Capital' of Mangoes
In Vinh Cuu district, Dong Nai province, known as the mango capital, Nguyen Duc Toan's apple orchard thrives. Toan's orchard, reached by a 20km journey through the forest from Ma Da commune, boasts an abundant harvest of fresh apples grown using organic farming methods. This ensures high quality and a characteristic sweetness. Inspired by an old apple tree in his garden, Toan invested nearly 200 million VND in a 2,500m2 greenhouse. The greenhouse controls temperature, humidity, and light, creating an ideal growing environment that minimizes pests and the need for pesticides. The result is clean, high-quality apples that attract locals and tourists alike. Besides the greenhouse, careful variety selection and meticulous care contribute to the apples' sweetness. After just 8 months, the trees bear fruit, and the orchard is currently in its third harvest with a yield of around 25 tons. Toan believes the yield will increase as the trees mature. According to Toan, apple farming is less labor-intensive than mango farming, yet more profitable. He plans to expand and develop an eco-tourism garden for visitors to enjoy fresh fruit. He also provides seedlings and guidance to other farmers. Local farmer Nguyen Van Phap, inspired by Toan, invested in a 1,500m2 greenhouse for 80 apple trees and yielded about 3 tons in the first season. Ma Da Commune Farmers' Association Chairman, On Van Thanh, confirmed 6 households are growing apples on about 1ha, with Toan as the pioneer. The Association plans to support capital for farmers to expand this successful model.
