Agriculture in 2024: "A Picture with Many Bright Colors"
Despite facing severe impacts from natural disasters, particularly Typhoon No. 3, Vietnam's agricultural sector achieved breakthrough growth in 2024. The total agricultural production value increased by 3.3% compared to 2023, driven by growth in crop production, animal husbandry, fisheries, and forestry. Agricultural exports reached a record high of 62.4 billion USD, with a trade surplus of 18.6 billion USD. This success is attributed to restructuring the agricultural sector, focusing on high-value crops and green transition, as well as successful market negotiations for key agricultural products like fresh fruit. Rice exports reached a record 9 million tons, valued at 5.8 billion USD, thanks to a focus on high-quality rice production and advanced techniques. Fruit exports also hit a record 7 billion USD, boosted by programs like "fruit spreading," which expanded market access and enhanced the value of Vietnamese fruit. However, challenges remain, such as the rapid, potentially unsustainable expansion of durian cultivation in areas vulnerable to saltwater intrusion. Sustainable development, prioritizing quality over quantity, is crucial for long-term competitiveness.
