Agriculture and Environment Join Forces for Sustainable Development
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh announced the proposed merger of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The proposal will be submitted to the Central Committee in January 2025 and, pending National Assembly approval, the merger will take place in February 2025. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Le Minh Hoan, stated that this restructuring aims to align with global trends, promoting sustainable growth within the agricultural sector. This initiative acknowledges that modern agriculture must prioritize not only food security and economic gains but also environmental sustainability. Agricultural production must minimize waste and greenhouse gas emissions while conserving resources. Consumers increasingly demand transparency and environmentally friendly practices throughout the entire process, from farm to table. The merger will facilitate collaboration between the two ministries, optimizing resource management and ensuring a cohesive approach to agricultural and environmental policy. The new Ministry of Agriculture and Environment will comprise 30 units, streamlining operations by eliminating 25 existing units from the two separate ministries.
