A Pomelo Orchard Left to Grow Wild
Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, owner of a 2-hectare pomelo orchard in Binh Phuoc Province, Vietnam, transitioned from traditional to organic farming. Initially, he used chemical fertilizers and pesticides, resulting in high yields but low profits. In 2021, he adopted organic practices, leading to a temporary decrease in yield and fruit size. However, by the second year, the fruit quality improved significantly, with juicier and sweeter segments. Now, after four years, his orchard thrives with rich soil and a balanced ecosystem. He controls weeds manually and uses organic fertilizers like bat manure and vermicompost. Pest control is managed with natural preparations from neem trees, lemons, and chili. This organic approach has reduced costs and improved fruit quality, resulting in higher prices and consistent sales. Although the initial transition was challenging, Mr. Tam now enjoys higher profits, a healthier orchard, and the satisfaction of providing high-quality, organic pomelos.
