30-Year-Old Coffee Plantation Thrives with Organic Farming
Located a few kilometers from Pleiku City, Vietnam, Mr. Huynh Thong's family has practiced organic coffee farming for 15 years. Their 5-hectare plantation, almost 30 years old, remains highly productive due to their commitment. Mr. Thong explained that using chemical fertilizers degraded the soil and impacted their health. After attending training courses on organic farming, they transitioned to using composted chicken manure, microbial fertilizers, and other organic options. This change improved soil quality, promoted sustainable plant growth, and reduced fertilizer costs from 200 million VND to just over 100 million VND per year. He also allows grass to grow naturally, retaining moisture and enriching the soil. While the yield isn't dramatically higher than conventional farms, the reduced costs result in a substantial profit of 800 million to 1 billion VND annually. Mr. Thong's success demonstrates that organic farming in Vietnam can be both environmentally and economically sustainable.
