1 Million Hectare High-Quality Rice Project Helps Farmers Increase Income
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development initiated the 'Development of 1 Million Hectares of High-Quality, Low-Emission Rice Associated with Green Growth in the Mekong Delta Region to 2030' Project to enhance the quality and value of Vietnamese rice. Dong Thap province is at the forefront of this project, implementing sustainable cultivation practices and supporting farmers in improving their income. By collaborating with cooperatives, the province is building a rice linkage chain from production to consumption, strengthening the Dong Thap rice brand. Farmers participating in the project are seeing a 20-30% reduction in input costs and a profit increase of 2.2 million VND/ha. Cooperatives like Thang Loi Agricultural Service Cooperative are applying new techniques, including mechanization and reduced fertilizer use, resulting in higher yields and profits. While challenges remain, such as uneven fertilizer application and straw collection, the project aims to expand to nearly 70,000ha by 2025 and 161,252ha by 2030, solidifying Dong Thap as a high-quality rice center in the Mekong Delta.
